Over 1,000 prison office staff in Northern Ireland are to receive special danger money payments because of the threat from dissident republicans.

The extra pay award follows the murder of a  prison officer just over a year ago.

David Black, a prison officer in Magheraberry Prison, was shot dead by dissident republicans as he drove along the M1 in November 2012.

Following his murder  prison service staff renewed their demands for extra pay to reflect the threat they face, and they are now to be paid an additional  £1,300 (€1,575) a year.

The award applies to staff who joined since 2002 and earn up to £21,000 (€25,400) annually. Prison officers who joined before then are not included. They are paid substantially more and a special allowance is already built into their salaries.
