Ireland is expected to qualify for additional European Union funding for food and basic assistance for those who qualify for help.

The country has drawn down €14m from the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived over the past seven years.

The next round of funding is about to be allocated.

It is expected that Ireland will receive a substantial increase because the number of people qualifying has risen.
