Taoiseach Enda Kenny has promised to work closely with Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett when appointing senior staff in Leinster House.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1's Marian Finucane Show, the Ceann Comhairle said he received a letter from the Taoiseach last night confirming this.

Mr Barrett said the letter represented "progress" in this controversy that erupted on the floor of the Dáil earlier in the week.

Last Wednesday Mr Barrett told the Dáil that attempts were made to blacken his name regarding the selection of the new Clerk of the Dáil.

Typically the Clerk/Secretary of the Oireachtas is appointed by the Taoiseach on the recommendation of the Ceann Comhairle.

The Government had wanted to introduce a new appointment system similar to that used for other senior public service posts.

Mr Barrett wanted the job filled by two civil servants but said on Wednesday the Taoiseach could decide.
