An Irishman found guilty of murder on the holiday island of Tenerife has had his sentence reduced on appeal.
Keith Burke, 21, was unanimously convicted by a jury last December of fatally stabbing local ferry worker Abraham Báez outside his holiday apartment in Playa de Las Américas in April 2010.
Judges have downgraded the murder conviction to aggravated homicide, reducing Burke's jail term from 15 years and three months to 12 years and eight months.
He will still have to pay compensation of €200,000 to the parents of his victim.
Burke was found to have left the scene of the original fight, which was triggered by a petty row between the pair's respective girlfriends, to return momentarily to the apartment to grab a nine-inch knife from the kitchen which he then used to stab Mr Báez in the neck, killing him instantly.
His then girlfriend Sara Stuart, aged 30 and also Irish, was found guilty of wounding the deceased's partner, Laura Negrín, in the late-night confrontation and received a suspended sentence.
