A parish priest in Co Cavan has been appointed as the next Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise.

Pope Francis has appointed 55-year-old Father Francis Duffy to succeed Bishop Colm O'Reilly.

Fr Duffy is a native of Templeport and has worked as a teacher and school principal.

He currently serves in the parish of Laragh.

Bishop O'Reilly tendered his resignation to the pope two years ago at the age of 75.
