Childline received almost 800,000 calls last year, but one in three calls to the service went unanswered.

According to annual statistics for 2012 from the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the issues of child abuse and welfare were a serious concern, with over 14% of contacts made relating to these issues.

The organisation also said over 80% of contacts made to Childline in 2012 were out of hours.

Over 10,000 contacts to the service by young people related specifically to bullying.

Figures for 2012 also show that 3,726 texts, emails and one-to-one web chats were received.

Childline, run by the ISPCC, is a member of Child Helpline International, which is marking the seventh annual International Child Helpline Day today.
