Finnish mobile phone company, Nokia, has launched a new high-end smartphone to compete with rivals the iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC1.

The new Lumia 925 handset introduces metal to Nokia smartphone design for the first time.

Other new features include an 8.7MP camera which can take up to 10 images at once and a new app, Oggl, which will allow users take and share pictures with other users and on social networks.

It also has a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory, half the size of its predecessor, the Lumia 920, although a larger version is planned.

The phone can also take a wireless charging cover which can be clipped onto the back. But in-built wireless charging has been dropped, making the phone lighter than the 920.

The handset will be introduced into Europe with Vodafone, the US with T-Mobile and China by China Mobile and China Unicorn.

Sales are expected to start in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and China in June, followed by the US and other markets.

The handset will be priced around €469 SIM free and country-specific pricing for Ireland will be announced shortly.

The phone was launched in London this morning. Last week, shareholders of Nokia criticised the company's strategy at its AGM.
