RTÉ Director General Noel Curran has said the organisation has achieved a minimum cut of 30% in the fees and salaries paid to some of its top presenters, but that a reduction of up to 40% can be achieved on some other contracts still up for renewal.
Mr Curran was speaking to journalists after he gave an address to students at the Journalism faculity at the University of Limerick.
He said he is very conscious of what licence fee payers are thinking about RTÉ, and he understands public concern over high salaries.
He said RTÉ had a unique set of presenters who were delivering extraordinary audience figures which comparable broadcast stations across Europe do not achieve.
He said it was RTÉ’s fault if they were paying some of its top talent too much, and it was up to RTÉ to fix that situation.
