Staff at HMV in the UK relayed their sacking live on social media, using the company’s official Twitter account.
The rogue tweeter wrote: "We're tweeting live from HR where we're all being fired! Exciting!!"
HMV's 62,561 Twitter followers learned that the staff were to lose their jobs as it happened from the following tweets:
"There are over 60 of us being fired at once! Mass execution, of loyal employees who love the brand."
"Sorry we've been quiet for so long. Under contract, we've been unable to say a word, or - more importantly - tell the truth."
The tweeter then wrote: "Just overheard our Marketing Director (he's staying, folks) ask 'How do I shut down Twitter?'"
"So really, what have we to lose? It's been a pleasure folks! Best wishes to you all!"
HMV in the UK has declined to comment on the tweets, which were deleted 20 minutes after the first message went out.
The company's joint administrators confirmed that 190 redundancies have been made across the head office and distribution network in the UK.
