A woman terminally ill with multiple sclerosis will begin a High Court action next week aimed at allowing her to be helped to die.

The case being taken by 59-year-old Marie Fleming from Wicklow is the first of its kind in this country.

It begins on Tuesday before a three-judge High Court. Ms Fleming, a former lecturer at University College Dublin, wants an order declaring a section of the 1993 Criminal Law Suicide Act invalid under the Constitution and incompatible with the European Convention on Human Rights.
