Further evaluation of Mayo man found with large collection of child porn

A Co Mayo man who had one of the largest collections of child pornography ever found by gardaí has had his case adjourned a second time to allow for further psychiatric evaluation.

The 135,555 images and videos found on James Clarke's computer included images showing severe child sexual abuse.

The pornography was organised into computer folders by themes and individuals and Clarke was using an internet site to offer the images to others.

Clarke, 58, of Devlis Cottage, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to four counts of knowingly distributing child pornography at Russell View Square, Tallaght, Dublin 24, on separate dates in August 2010.

He also pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography on 20 August, 2010.

Defence Counsel Kitty Perle told Judge Patricia Ryan today that a report, which had been ordered following the sentence hearing last July, stated that Clarke would benefit from further "psychiatric intervention and treatment".

She asked the court to follow the recommendation in the report for a further adjournment.

Judge Ryan ordered a second report and adjourned the case to next January for sentence. She remanded Clarke in continuing custody until that date.
