Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar has confirmed that he intends to increase the penalty points for not wearing a seatbelt and driving while using a mobile phone.

He also said he wanted to increase the penalty points for speeding.

However, he added this would not happen until the speed limits review had been completed, as there are some speed limits that needed to be rationalised.

Mr Varadkar said increases were needed because the current penalty levels were obviously not acting as a deterrent, as people are still dying on the roads.

He said he would be drafting a bill in the next few months, and subject to the legislation passing through the Houses of the Oireachtas, he hoped to have the new penalty points structure in operation by early next year.
