Police in Australia have said they are concerned for the safety of an Irish woman who has gone missing in Melbourne.

Jill Meagher was last seen leaving a bar in the suburb of Brunswick at around 1.30am yesterday morning (around 4.30pm on Friday Irish time).

She had been socialising with work colleagues.

Police have been told the 29-year-old left the bar with the intention of walking to her home in Brunswick.

Detective Sergeant Steve Bull said that the disappearance is out of character for Mrs Meagher and they have concerns for her safety.

They have been reviewing CCTV footage of the area in an attempt to trace her movements.

The missing woman is described as being of a fair complexion, 165cm tall, of slim build, with long curly black hair and brown eyes.

She was wearing a blue dress, a black jacket, black patterned stockings and high heels.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is on standby but has not been asked for assistance in the case so far.
