Events across the country to mark Culture Night

Hundreds of events are taking place across the country this evening to mark Culture Night.

Museums, galleries, theatres and public buildings have opened their doors free of charge to mark the occasion.

Culture Night began as a modest experiment in 2006 in Dublin, but is now a major part of the arts and cultural calendar.

This year events are taking place in 34 cities, towns and villages.

Highlights include a marathon reading of Ulysses by 18 voluntary groups at the Source Arts Centre in Tipperary, the transformation of the Gluckman Gallery in Cork into a live sketchbook and free recording sessions at Platform 4 in Kildare.

The Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht is providing funding of €200,000 for events across the country.

Young people got a taste of filmmaking at a drop in film set in Limerick as part of its Culture night events.

It is one of over 30 free events that is making up Culture night in the city.

The filmmaking drop in workshop is being run by the Fresh Film festival.

At Limerick Printmakers, children are busy painting putting their own stamp on a “Big City Block Painting” as they work with ink coated stamps and place them on a giant map of Limerick city.

They have been placing stamps like rugby balls, footprints, houses and other household items on the map as they make their own journey through the city map on the Gallery wall.
