A twin suicide bomb attack targeted a NATO base in eastern Afghanistan this morning, killing eight civilians and four policemen.

A spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said no one from the alliance was killed in the attack, which happened in Wardak province's Sayed Abad district.

The Taliban, which took responsibility for the attack, said it had dispatched two bombers, one on foot and one in a truck.

Around 19 people wounded in the attack have been taken from Wardak province to the emergency hospital in the capital Kabul for better treatment.

The NATO base was targeted last year on the eve of the tenth anniversary of the 11 September attack.
