An Irishman has been shot dead after his car was ambushed in southeastern Nigeria.

Robert Gray, 45, from Westport in Co Mayo, was killed and his driver was seriously injured in the shooting, which occurred on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson at the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to Mr Gray's family.

Mr Gray had worked in Nigeria for a number of years as an engineer and was involved in road construction projects with Irish company PW Group.

It is understood he was working near the Cameroon border, in southeastern Nigeria, when the attack occurred.

Mr Gray was married with two children.

His body is expected to be repatriated next week.
