Up to 12,000 people took part in climbing Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo for the annual Reek Sunday pilgrimage.

Despite favourable climbing conditions figures were down.

Archbishop of Tuam Dr Michael Neary led pilgrims on the climb which has been undertaken for hundreds of years.

He was joined by the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown.

Mass was celebrated on the summit from 8am and at every half-hour until the last mass at 2pm.

Over 600 local volunteers were on hand to help pilgrims and no major injuries were reported.

A few brave pilgrims climbed Croagh Patrick bare foot.
