The Migrant Rights Centre has called for the introduction of a scheme that would allow undocumented migrant workers to earn permanent residency in Ireland.

The group handed in a petition to Minister for Justice Alan Shatter today.

The petition was signed by 4,000 Irish people who support the regularisation of undocumented migrants.

Migrant Rights Centre Edel McGinley has said that many undocumented migrants have PPS numbers and pay taxes.

Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland Ms McGinley said there are up to 30,000 undocumented migrants living in the State.
