Jack and Emily were the most popular babies' names registered in 2011.

The figures were released by the Central Statistics Office today.

Jack has held on to the top position every year since 2007. Emily moved up one place to take the number one spot for the first time.

There were 840 boys named Jack last year, while 596 girls were named Emily.

Jack, James, Sean, Daniel and Conor have made up the top five boys' names since 2007 and four of them - Jack, Sean, Conor and James - have been in the top five since 1998.

Emily, Sophie, Emma, Grace and Lily are the top five girls' names.

The CSO figures also show that there were 74,650 births registered in 2011. There were 38,223 boys born and 36,427 girls.

Last year’s total was 23.3% higher than in 2002 when 60,521 babies were registered.
