Local authorities to send Household Charge letters

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said that local authorities will send letters to people who have not paid the Household Charge in the next couple of weeks.

The minister said the letters would remind people of their obligations under the law, the late payment penalties and the fees involved.

Minister Hogan was speaking in the Dáil during a topical issues debate.

He said the income generated from the charge is under constant review.

However, the minister said 967,000 had registered for the charge by 22 June, which he said was 60% of the households liable for the charge.

Minister Hogan also told the Dáil that the Government now has a comprehensive data base of households, which will be of major assistance in implementing the property tax.
