Man jailed for 10 years in 'distressing' rape case

A 25-year-old man has been jailed for 10 years at the Central Criminal Court in Cork after he was convicted of raping a woman.

The case was described by the trial judge as "distressing" and "at the higher end of the scale of sexual offences".

The woman was dragged into a field and held for over an hour in May of 2011.

The court was told she had suffered hugely since the attack and that she had felt ashamed of it.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said he could not find a single factor in favour of the accused.

He imposed 10-year concurrent jail sentences on him after he was convicted by a jury of rape, sexual assault and false imprisonment.

To protect the victim's identity, the man cannot be identified.
