John McAreavey to take stand in Mauritius trial tomorrow

The prosecution lawyer at the Michaela McAreavey murder trial in Mauritius has confirmed he intends to call John McAreavey tomorrow.

Mr McAreavey has been in Mauritius since the trial began more than two weeks ago.

Earlier, the court heard that the hotel worker who claims he saw the two accused leave the crime scene was seen an hour later drinking tea and joking with one of the defendants.

In his evidence, prosecution witness Raj Theekoy placed the two defendants, who were his work colleagues, at the scene around the time of Mrs McAreavey's death.

However, defence lawyer Rama Verlayden pointed to a number of contradictions in Mr Theekoy’s statements and accused him of telling lies.

The trial also heard from restaurant manager Mark Olive, who told the court of seeing Ms McAreavey and her husband.

He said that Ms McAreavey ordered tea from him and he went to the hotel for it. When he returned she had gone and Mr McAreavey was still there.

Meanwhile Doctor Vamachandra Sunassee told the court of being called by the hotel manager. He said he was brought to accommodation, where there was a woman on the ground. He said she was not breathing and there were no sounds from her heart.

The doctor said he concluded at that point that Ms McAreavey was dead.

The trial is entering its third week.
