Smithwick Tribunal granted extension to deadline for final report

Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has granted an extension to the timeframe within which the Smithwick Tribunal should complete its work.

Alan Shatter told the Dáil that the inquiry's new deadline is now 31 October 2012.

The tribunal is investigating the deaths of two RUC officers, Chief Supt Harry Breen and Supt Bob Buchanan, in 1989.

Judge Peter Smithwick sought a second extension to the inquiry's deadline last week.

The final report into the deaths of the two RUC officers was originally due last November but Judge Smithwick sought a six-month extension.

Deputy Shatter told the Dáil this morning that the final report would go to the Clerk of the Dáil and that all TDs would be able to view it at the same time.

The motion to allow the extension was not challenged by any members of the Opposition.
