Politicians voice concerns over proposed closure of RTÉ's London bureau

Politicians attending the 44th plenary session of the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly have raised their concerns regarding RTÉ's proposal to close its London bureau in September.

They are urging the two governments to support the case for retention of the London correspondent and assist in the search for alternatives to the closure.

The motion was moved by Paul Murphy MP, with the support of 15 members from across the legislatures.

Mr Murphy told today's assembly session that he was aware that RTÉ faces substantial and significant financial difficulties, but he also said he still felt politicians should ask the broadcaster to rethink its position.

He went on to say MPs accept the financial problems facing RTÉ. He added, however, that he believed there are imaginative ways in which RTÉ could look at keeping the presence, without incurring the cost that it seeks to save.

Senator Jim Walsh suggested the assembly enter into some dialogue with the Director General of RTÉ, Noel Curran, to ensure there is not a void created because of the proposed changes.
