Former union leader Sheila Conroy dies

The death has taken place of Sheila Conroy, the first woman to be elected to The National Executive Council of the Irish Transport & General Workers' Union.

Ms Conroy was also chairperson of RTÉ in the 1970s.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore described her as a lifelong heroine of the trade union and labour movement who made a huge contribution to changing Irish society.

Congress General Secretary David Begg also paid tribute to her “lifelong service and dedication to the labour movement".
