Gardaí in Cavan are hunting a six strong gang who escaped with a substantial amount of cash in a bank raid tonight.

At around 5pm, a car was used to ram the front of the Bank of Ireland premises in Kingscourt.

Six armed and masked men ran into the branch office and demanded money.

They escaped with what is believed to be a substantial amount of cash.

As the raiders fled, they set fire to their car which in turn led to four other cars catching fire on the street.

The gang escaped in another car which was later found burned out half a mile away.

The main street in the town was closed off for sometime as the fire brigade tackled the car fires.

It is understood no shots were fired although guns were pointed at several people.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
