Police in England have arrested a 38-year-old man and a woman on suspicion of murder after five children died in a house fire in Derby.

A sixth child was taken to hospital for specialist treatment.

Emergency services were called to the house on Victory Road in Allenton just before 4am.

Derbyshire Police said eight people - two adults and six children - were taken to the Royal Derby Hospital.

The children who died in the fire were aged between five and 10.

Derbyshire's Assistant Chief Constable Steve Cotterill said the woman in custody is in her 20s, but stressed that detectives are keeping an open mind about the cause of the fire.

The children's parents, neighbours and firefighters fought to rescue them from the first floor of the council house.

Mr Cotterill said the father had made a "valiant attempt" to save the children.
