A Luas driver has gone on trial charged with driving his tram dangerously leading to a collision with a double-decker bus in Dublin more than two years ago.

Oriyomi Emmanuel, 39, from Jamestown Park, Ratoath in Co Meath, has pleaded not guilty to driving his tram in a manner dangerous to the safety of the public.

The prosecution alleges he drove into a junction at Middle Abbey Street and O'Connell Street in the city centre without having been given a signal to proceed.

The tram driven by Mr Emmanuel ended up embedded in the middle of a number 16 bus, which was driving towards Parnell Square.

The court heard the bus driver had had a green light to proceed through the junction.

The trial is expected to last until the end of this week.
