An investigation into the death of a 60-year-old man in Waterford last night has been upgraded to a murder inquiry.
A post mortem carried out on the body of Joe O’Brien today found that he died from head injuries.
Two people are still being questioned in connection with Mr O’Brien’s death.
The 47-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman both knew the victim.
Mr O’Brien’s body was found in the Scotch Marsh House apartment complex in the Scotch Quay area of the city.
It is understood Mr O'Brien was visiting the apartment at the time and had been drinking with a number of people.
It is believed a row broke out and he was assaulted.
Members of the Garda Forensic Bureau examined the scene today.
The post mortem examination was carried out at Waterford Regional Hospital by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis.
Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the Scotch Quay, Scotch Hall or William and Canada Street areas of the city between 9.30pm and 10.30pm last night to come forward.
