The condition of the man injured in an incident involving two elephants at Courtney Brothers Circus in Cork city is said to be critical but stable.
The man is now in a critical condition at Cork University Hospital.
Wayne Courtney from Courtney Brothers Circus said workers were getting ready for a performance when the incident happened in the elephant pen.
One elephant hit another and the injured man "got a knock" as a result.
Witnesses say the man was treated at the scene by an HSE Rapid Response Unit and by paramedics.
The Health and Safety Authority is not investigating the incident at present.
A spokesman said if it is reported as a workplace accident, it will investigate.
