A 40-year-old, two-and-a-half tonne Indian elephant named ‘Baby’ is to perform at Courtneys Circus in Cork tonight, a day after she broke out of her enclosure and went walkabout in a local shopping centre.

Baby broke through a barrier and galloped 200 metres along the road to the Blackpool Retail Park during her escape at around 4.50pm yesterday.

Baby was brought back after a few minutes by her handlers Joy and Sonny Gartner and they have insisted there was no danger.

The elephant’s handlers say she ran away from the circus because she did not want to take a shower.
