The Irish Medicines Board has said that it never approved PIP breast implants for use in Ireland, contrary to a claim yesterday by the Harley Medical Group.

In a statement today, the IMB said that the claim by the Harley Medical Group in a statement issued to RTE after an Oireachtas Health Committee hearing was factually inaccurate.

The board said that it did not have any role in approving the PIP breast implants received by more than 1,500 women in Ireland.

It said that it had told the Harley Medical Group more than once previously that it had no direct role in authorising any medical device before it comes on the market.
