An oil laundering plant has been discovered in Co Cavan.

Officers from Revenue’s Customs Service and gardaí found the plant, which had the capacity to launder around 10m litres of fuel a year, at Whitegate, Virginia.

The plant was found in a yard behind a private dwelling.

Two vans, bleaching earth, a compressor and a large quantity of laundered product along with ancillary equipment was seized.

One man was questioned and later released.

Revenue estimates the plant represented a potential loss to the Exchequer of €5m a year.
