A 54-year-old GP has been before Mallow District Court in Co Cork charged with sexually assaulting one woman and with indecently assaulting two others.

Doctor Kevin Mulcahy of Creggane, Lombardstown, Mallow, Co Cork, was returned for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court next month.

Dr Mulcahy was arrested this morning and charged with two counts of sexually assaulting a woman at his surgery in Lombardstown in 1995 and 1996.

He was also charged with indecently assaulting two other women, one at his surgery at Strand Street, Kanturk, Co Cork, between September 1989 and June 1990, and the other at Banteer, Co Cork, two days before Christmas 1989.

Detective Garda Murphy said Dr Mulcahy had nothing to say in reply to the charges.

Dr Mulcahy's solicitor Carmel Keane applied for a ban on publication of the defendant's name on the basis that his defence would be prejudiced by his identification.

However, Judge Olan Kelleher said there was no basis in law to grant such an order and he had no discretion in the matter.

Dr Mulcahy was served with the book of evidence in his case during the court hearing and he was returned for trial to the Circuit Criminal Court in Cork on 24 April.

He was released on bail.
