A major search is under way after a prisoner escaped from Loughan House prison in Co Cavan this evening.
Martin McDermott, 25, from Raphoe in Co Donegal, was serving a seven-year sentence for the manslaughter of Garda Gary McLoughlin.
He was reported missing from the prison at around 5pm. The exact circumstances of how he escaped are not yet known.
McDermott was sentenced in July 2011. He had led gardaí on a high-speed chase, which ended when he crashed into a patrol car, killing Garda McLoughlin.
