The captain of a cargo ship involved in a collision with a passenger ferry in Belfast Lough has pleaded guilty to being over the alcohol limit.

Miroslaw Pozniak, 55, with an address in Poland, spoke through an interpreter when he appeared at Bangor Magistrates Court, accused of having excess alcohol in his system while in charge of a ship.

The court heard Mr Pozniak’s record as a captain was clear and that he had fully co-operated with police during questioning.

His lawyer requested that Mr Pozniak be granted bail and suggested his damaged vessel as an address.

However, the police objected and told the judge they did not see the ship as a suitable address.

The judge remanded the defendant in custody to appear again at Newtownards Magistrates Court on 12 March.
