A 53-year-old Dublin mechanic has been sentenced to seven years for killing his 30-year-old partner.

Bernard Curran of The Weir, Lucan, said he had been trying to kill himself but Helen Donegan, a mother of one, grabbed the gun and it went off.

The father-of-two then hid Ms Donegan's body, reported her missing and pretended to help her family to look for her.

Mr Justice Paul Carney said it was difficult to imagine a more callous treatment of a family as occurred in this case.

Afterwards, Ms Donegan's family said the sentence would not bring her back.
