A series of nationwide protests against the new Household Charge have been taking place in 40 different locations across the country.

A spokesperson for the Department of the Environment has said that any attempt to discourage people from paying the €100 charge was irresponsible.

An estimated crowd of between 400 and 500 turned out in Cork for a protest this afternoon. while between 300 and 400 people attended the protest in Waterford.

In Limerick, about 200 people have been protesting. More have been giving out leaflets and demonstrating in several areas of Dublin.

According to its website, the Campaign Against Household & Water Taxes believes its campaign is gaining huge momentum and that the mood is changing in the country against ongoing austerity measures.

The Government expects to raise €160m from the Household Charge this year.
