Dr Etop Akpan, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, has been found guilty on two counts of poor professional performance by the Medical Council fitness to practise committee.

It was also found that he failed to take adequate responsibility for Sharon McEneaney and ensure she received appropriate and timely care.

The 31-year-old woman waited nine months for a cancer diagnosis after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

Ms McEneaney from Carrickmacross in Monaghan died in April 2009 after being treated at Beaumont Hospital.

Earlier today, Eileen Barrington, senior counsel for Dr Akpan, told the inquiry that a Health Service Executive report into the affair criticised other doctors.

She said the report found Dr Akpan to be careful, hard-working and reflective.

Ms Barrington said that doctors at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital were working in an environment that put patients at risk.

She said there had been a systems failure but that did not amount to professional misconduct.

Ms McEneaney was the eldest of five children and worked as a manager in a Dublin crèche.

She attended the emergency department of the Lourdes hospital three times between October and November 2007.

Initially, she was suspected of having an ovarian cyst after hospital tests.

A diagnosis of neurofibromatosis was then made in December 2007.

Later, after an intervention by local GP and former TD Dr Rory O'Hanlon in May 2008, she had a biopsy and a malignant tumour was diagnosed.

She was referred to Beaumont Hospital for treatment in July 2008 and died in April 2009.

During an earlier hearing, Dr Akpan said he was horrified that a biopsy he had ordered for Ms McEneaney had not been carried out.

The Medical Council inquiry was told that Dr Akpan has taken steps to ensure such events do not occur again.

Ms McEneaney's family were at today's inquiry.
