Solicitors working at Roscrea District Court staged a walkout today to protest at the decision by the Courts Service to close the courthouse and move the service to Nenagh.

The solicitors say it will undermine the administration of justice for the most vulnerable in the community and affect business in the town.

The Courts Service said the move is designed to bring more efficiency to the services in Co Tipperary.

Courts have been sitting at the building since 1841 and €40,000 was spent on upgrading it in recent years.

The Courts Service said the courthouse in Nenagh offers better accommodation, security and facilities for solicitors, defendants and witnesses.

It is understood the move will bring about savings of €8,000 a year, but local people say it may end up costing up to €80,000 in extra travel and garda costs.
