A 30-year-old man has been remanded in custody to appear in court in Co Cork next week charged with assaulting a man who later died.

John O'Driscoll of Dan Corkery Place, Macroom, was brought before Bantry District Court where he was charged with assault causing serious harm to 42-year-old Don Geasley of Masseytown, Macroom.

Mr Geasley's body was found at the rear of his rented home at 10.30am on 15 September.

A post mortem examination confirmed he had been the victim of a violent assault.

Sergeant Alex Butler of Macroom Garda Station said Mr O'Driscoll was arrested on Tuesday and formally charged. Sgt Butler told the court the accused made no reply to the charge.

Inspector Joe O'Connor applied for a short remand in custody to allow time for the book of evidence to be prepared.

Mr O'Driscoll's solicitor said his client would not be seeking bail and free legal aid was granted.

Judge McNulty remanded Mr O'Driscoll in custody to appear before Macroom District Court on 2 November.
