A cash box containing thousands of euro has been taken during a robbery in Navan, Co Meath.

The incident happened at 10.30am when a security man was approached by three masked men wielding iron bars.

The security man was carrying a cash box from a Halfords store in a retail park on the outskirts of the town at the time.

The gang demanded the box and then escaped in a white van. It was found abandoned a short distance away in a disused office car park.

It is believed the gang were met there by a fourth person driving another van.

The box contained around €11,000 in cash and several thousand euro in cheques.

It is believed the gang's original target may have been a larger shop on the retail park but they missed the removal of cash from it.

Supt Michael Devine said they were following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the robbery, but they were still asking anyone with information to come forward and contact Navan Garda Station on 046-9079930.
