Police in Portugal have launched an investigation after four Irish women were robbed while on holiday in the Algarve.

The incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Their passports were among a number of items stolen.

The women are traumatised but uninjured and are planning to continue with their holiday.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to them through the embassy in Lisbon.
