The UN Security Council has condemned the Syrian government's deadly crackdown on protests and called for those responsible to be held 'accountable'.

A council presidential statement said the 15-nation body 'condemns the widespread violations of human rights and the use of force against civilians by the Syrian authorities'.

The statement was agreed after weeks of often-acrimonious negotiations.

However, Lebanon has disassociated itself from the statement agreed by the other 14 members.

A Lebanese diplomat told a council meeting that the statement would not 'help' end the Syrian crisis.

Opposition and human rights groups say more than 1,600 civilians have been killed in protests against the rule of President Bashar al-Assad.
