A 30-year-old woman has appeared in court in Galway charged with the murder of a 59-year-old man at an apartment complex in Salthill.

Maura Thornton with an address at Apartment 1, 183 Upper Salthill was charged with the murder of Kevin Joyce.

Mr Joyce, from Rockmount Road, Highfield Park, Galway, died from multiple stab wounds following an incident at the apartment building shortly after 10pm on Sunday night.

Garda Greg Fleming told the District Court this morning that when charged, Ms Thornton said: 'May he rest in peace'.

Judge Gerard Furlong remanded her in custody to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice on 9 August.

On the application of defence solicitor Adrian McLynn, Judge Furlong requested that Ms Thornton undergo psychiatric assessment and all available medical assistance while in prison.
