Gardaí in Galway say they are now treating as murder the death of a 59-year-old man whose body was found in an apartment complex at Salthill last night.

A post mortem examination on the man's body was conducted at Galway University Hospital this evening by Deputy State Pathologist Khailid Jaber.

It found that the man had died from multiple stab wounds.

Gardaí have also confirmed tonight that a weapon was recovered at the scene.

They say it is now being taken to Garda Headquarters in Dublin for forensic examination.

A woman in her 30s who was arrested at the scene last night is still being detained at Mill Street Station in Galway city.

Her period of detention was extended by a further 12 hours this afternoon.

She must either be charged or released by tomorrow morning.

Last night's stabbing took place on a balcony outside the apartment in which the woman now in custody had been living for some time.

Both the victim and the woman being held by gardaí are believed to be from Co Galway.
