Former Fine Gael politician Liam Cosgrave and businessman Jim Kennedy have lost their legal actions to stop their trials on corruption charges.

Their separate challenges were each dismissed by the High Court today.

The trials are listed for hearing at the Circuit Criminal Court in Dublin in early October.

The two men are charged in connection with the attempted rezoning of land owned by Jackson Way Properties at Carrickmines in Dublin in 1992 and the successful rezoning of part of these lands in 1997. Both men deny the charges.

Mr Justice John Hedigan dismissed both challenges and refused to put a stay on the trials pending any appeal to the Supreme Court.

He said if there was to be a stay, it would have to be granted by the Supreme Court.

He noted that due to the lack of a Court of Civil Appeal in this country, the Supreme Court was completely overwhelmed.

And he said it would take around three years for the appeals to be heard.

Lawyers for each man are expected to mention the cases to the Supreme Court tomorrow morning.
