Four women who were convicted of running a brothel in an apartment in Galway City centre this week have each been fined €300.

The women, aged between 19 and 23, pleaded guilty to assisting in the management of the brothel at Merchants Road when they appeared before the District Court this morning.

The brothel, which was being advertised on the internet, was raided by gardaí last night.

During the raid they found 21 mobile phones, details of clients and €1,500 in cash in the apartment.

The court was told the four women, all Romanian nationals, had only been in Ireland for a number of weeks and had planned to leave Galway shortly.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy told gardaí, who sought to have the women deported, that he did not have the jurisdiction to do so.
