Two people have been arrested after rioting involving up to 100 people in Portadown, Co Armagh, last night.

Two men, aged 24 and 42, were charged with riotous behaviour and criminal damage in the wake of the trouble.

The 42-year-old was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Petrol bombs, bricks, fire-works and other missiles were thrown at police who responded by firing a number of baton rounds and arrested three people.

The trouble flared in the Corcrain Road and Charles Street just before midnight.

It is not yet known if there were any injuries.

‘Around 100 loyalists attacked police who prevented them attacking nationalist homes,’ local Sinn Féin politician John O'Dowd said.

Police confirmed that loyalists provoked the violence when a planned peaceful protest was hijacked by a violent minority.

Mayor of the local Craigavon council, Democratic Unionist Alan Carson, condemned the violence saying: 'This does not do anyone any good. The violence we saw last night is something we assigned to the history books.'

Last night's trouble is the latest in a series of disturbances across the region.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer has reminded parents of their responsibility to make sure that their children do not get involved in rioting after the disturbances.
