The Criminal Assets Bureau may be given extended powers, including the right to pursue criminal assets abroad.
Minister for Justice Alan Shatter told the Oireachtas Justice Committee today that the CAB had shown criminals that 'there would be a day of reckoning' and that they would be unable to hold on to their criminal gains.
The Minister said a review of CAB's powers was being carried out in his department.
One possible change would be for more EU member states to have their own CABs, with greater co-operation across Europe, to confiscate criminal assets.
